Guilin Gongcheng Moon Persimmon
Guilin Gongcheng Moon Persimmon is the most poetic fruit of autumn, named for its full-moon shape. These persimmons are large, with an orange-red skin when ripe and soft, juicy flesh that releases a rich, sweet aroma with a gentle suck. Gongcheng's unique danxia landform and humid climate give Moon Persimmons their distinct taste—the loose, fertile soil and large temperature difference between day and night allow the persimmons to accumulate more sugar, reaching a sweetness of over 18 degrees. Every October, Gongcheng's mountain villages become a "kingdom of persimmons": villagers peel the picked persimmons and hang them on bamboo poles to dry, forming golden "persimmon curtains" that sway in the sun, one of Guilin's most iconic autumn and winter scenes. Foreign visitors are often drawn to this spectacular drying scene and can't help but join in, experiencing the fun of making persimmon cakes by hand. Dried Moon Persimmons become soft and glutinous persimmon cakes, covered with a natural white frost. Biting into one, the flesh is as smooth as honey, sweet but not cloying, with a faint fruity aroma. Gongcheng Moon Persimmons are not only delicious but also rich in carotene and vitamins. Local elders often say, "One persimmon a day keeps health and longevity," making them a favorite for autumn and winter health in Guilin.
