Guilin Triangular Zongzi

Guilin Triangular Zongzi gets its name from its triangular shape, the most common zongzi style in Guilin—small, portable, with various fillings. It's smaller than ordinary zongzi, mostly palm-sized, with sweet fillings (like red bean paste, sesame) or savory ones (like fresh meat, dried shrimps). To make it, a bamboo leaf is folded into a triangular funnel, filled with filling and glutinous rice, compacted, wrapped with the remaining leaf, tied into a stable triangle with cotton thread, and boiled for 2-3 hours. Its advantages are easy wrapping, easy cooking, and a stable shape, making it portable—ideal as a gift for relatives and friends during the Dragon Boat Festival. When peeled, the rice is firm and not loose; whether sweet or savory, the filling is evenly distributed in the rice. Street stalls often sell triangular zongzi, heated and wrapped in oil paper, easy to eat on the go. Foreigners will find its shape interesting; its small size is perfect for finishing in one go without waste, and diverse fillings can satisfy different tastes, making it a great introduction to Guilin's zongzi culture.
